Having recently switched from BT to TalkTalk for my calls, I now find that
caller display does not work when calling mobiles. TalkTalk say this is so
they can offer cheaper call rates. Is this correct?

Thanks,
Julian

Im afraid it is, there are a few threads on this, apparently they have
bodged together a number of PremiCells to route the calls. The good news is
that over the weekend, CLI works.

Wasnt there an issue over this a while back? orange perahaps? because of
the fact that rather than having a proper interconnect like they should as a
telecoms operator they are on mass clogging up the cell which happens to be
supplying the premicells with calls from around the country.

Illegal maybe not but im sure orange disconnected some companies that did
this and am suprised that a company as big as CPW with I assume lots of
customers can do it? How credible is your source?

Yes, calls will almost certainly be routed over mobile networks
instead of BT, probably by using banks of fixed mobile terminals in
CPW (or Opal)s switch (es?), thus losing the CLI as the call is
forwarded via the mobile networks.

You can force CLI presentation on a call by call basis by prefixing
with 1280 (to route via BT) or indeed using the 1xxx code of any
operator which has CLI presentation to mobiles (but you will probably
pay a higher rate!).

As others in the thread have hinted at, this is because TalkTalk, as
with most other cheap LCR providers, use GSM Gateways to make calls
directly over the Mobile networks, instead of routing the calls to the
mobile providers official interconnects (which usually incur costly
BT or other Telco charges).

It is worth noting the recent, yet surprisingly unpublicised, news
that such gateways have been banned:
http://www.fcs.org.uk/news/press/2003/240703.asp

Id be interested if anyone has actually seen any LCR providers
actually pulling their gateways due to this DTI move.
