Are 0808 numbers specifically for FRIACO use ? The last time I
had one of these (for Freeserve, now Wanadoo), I was told that it
was only free to those freeserve subscribers who had opted for
a particular type of subscription, and that it was validated based
on CLI. Is this correct ?

Its still free to call, but Freeserve wouldnt answer the call unless
they recognised your CLI as someone paying for the service.

Have you actually *tried* this? Unless its been changed recently,
youll find that they *will* answer the call, but youll fail to
authenticate.

That is what I meant - my point was that you can call the number, you
wont be able to get service unless you are paying for it, and that the
call is free.

Good, but it read as if (and Im sure it is possible) thered just be no
answer if the CLI wasnt that of a known (registered) customer, prior
to any authentication attempt being made. I nearly queried it myself,
but it is quite obvious it would be to the ISPs benefit not to answer
as that would attract a fee... then it made me wonder if that might
be deemed unacceptable, rather like ring three times to indicate a
relation has arrived at the station and wants to be picked up, whilst
avoiding paying a fee for the (otherwise required) chargeable call. PGM

Since successful calls substantially outnumber failed calls which are
going to be few in number, theres no business case for spending time
and money reducing the number of failed calls.

Never mind that Energiss network is very complex and the PSTN-facing
kit may not belong to them, may not have the intelligence to perform
database lookups and apply business rules, and may not even be able to
refuse calls.
