You can have as many as you like, but only one can be active at any one
time.

I found away around it on XP:

As the Administrator setup a second User Account. For instance, if my main
account is Bill, my second user account is William.

Right click on the Skype Startup icon.

Select RUN AS...

Windows XP will open a RUN AS dialog box for the second instance of Skype
you wish to create or fun.

Select the User Account where you wish to run this second instance of Skype.

The second instance of skype will begin to open up.

Works a treat!

But you can only hold one conversation at once, surely..?! What happens if
a second call comes in on account 2 while youre talking on account 1..?

Then they get a ringing-only tone. But it is a good workaround.
