I cant seem to find anyone selling devices that allow you to lock your
landline phone for outgoing calls.

What I have in mind is a physical lock that you need a key to open -
probably fitted to the wall socket.

Unless anyone knows of different solution to preventing unauthorised calls
being made from a line that has a both a payphone handset and a regular
handset (in a different room) - i.e. I dont want to use a PIN code
arrangement as that will stop valid calls from the payphone (that are being
paid for.)

Nimans (www.nimans.net) stocked something that might be of use.

A more sophisticated solution is TEBARR/X66 - missed that when I first
looked.

RS used to do one too: rswww.com

the latest digital exchanges operated by both BT and Mercury

When did Mercury dissapear??

For not much more you could buy a DECT cordless phone with built in call
barring. Theres also a couple of lockable phones at:

I agree, but it doesnt decrease the validity of the solution.

Which doesnt stop someone plugging in their own phone to the same
socket. The solutions I mentioned do - thats why I suggested them.

Apart from the joy of paying around Ł20 more, what extra does the
TEBARR/X66 offer?

I think its electronic rather than physical. I *think* - not sure - the
cheap one just blocks off the socket. The TEBARR/X66 (lets just call it
a TX from now on!) is the same as the box I have, AFAICS.

You remove the holding screws from the existing front plate. You unlock
the TX and remove a panel. You screw it to the front of the front plate
using long (supplied) screws - it plugs into the socket at the same
time. You then replace the cover and lock it. In that situation you
cant remove it since without the key you have no access to the screws.

It is electronic - uses a 9v battery that lasts about a year. It has a
socket on the front into which you plug the telephone. While in the
unlocked position, all works normally. In the locked position, it only
allows 3 or 4 digits to be dialled - so emergency calls etc. still work.
I think it blocks operator calls too.
