Re. internet. When I dial-up my modem makes the usual faint
screeching/scraping noise but then it stops and makes an
echoing ping sound before continuing with its screeching.
Since this ping noise started my connnection has been very
slow - never more than 38k. BT say theres nothing wrong with
phone line, I assume they must be right, but I cant find
anything wrong with my computer hardware either. Any ideas
as to what is going wrong? Voice calls work okay. What is this
pinging noise on the line?

sounds like the V90 training ping to find the speed. Was the speed
lower in the past ie 33.6k or less - if so it may have been a V34
connection which doesnt do the ping or boing thing to test the line.

Thanks for explaining. I used to connect at 44 or 45k
and didnt get the ping/boing (boing is a better desciption!)

Now I get the boing and can only connect at 37 or 38k
I havent altered any settings so dont understand why this
has hapened.

Is there any way to switch off this V90 training?

you can force a v34 connection but it wil be slower (33k6). The thing
would have been happening before but less noticeable if it hadnt gone
down so many speed steps.

sounds like you are on a crappier line or there is more interference
than before. You could try explaiing to BT that you have seen a
significant drop in performance when accessing the internet and ask
them to check out the line. May get nowhere but worth a go.

And then get charged by BT to be told its a problem with your equipment
theres nothing we can do. Errm, how about telling which bit of my
equipment is causing it? How about telling me that you set it up
incorrectly in the first place and never should have put that extra wire
in without some sort of filter. You can tell Ive had bad experiences
here cant you?

Remove any other pieces of equipment that may be connected to the
line and see if it makes any difference. Some people have
reported problems with DECT base stations, though usually when
they are placed too close to the modem.

There has been snow and lots of heavy rain recently.

Ideal for line faults especially underground, however usually it just
deteriorates.

The boings are the V.90 tests and negotiations over line speed. The poorer
the line the longer it takes and the lower the eventual line speed.

The theoretical maximum is 56kb, however in perfect conditions you will get
48kb, and then conditions worsen it falls back to V.34, V.32bis, V.32 all
the way down to 1k2bps.
