I just thought, would this be possible. Cancel my BT / NTL line and
use VOIP to provide a landline. But (and this is the part which I am
not sure would be possible) either port my old numbers to the VOIP
line, or get issue a new landline number for it? (not 0870, 0845).
Even if it will cost some small amount of money? Or will it not be
possible / cost just as much as keeping the orginal landline?

Just who do you expect to provide the landline?
VOIP requires a new number.

What are the benefits of VOIP? The BT broadband one seems to offer nothing.

Except that you get a new line and option 3 for Ł7.xx a month and subsidised
adaptor - much cheaper than the Ł17 or whatever bt would want for a real
line, plus no install fee etc.

www.telappliant.co.uk will provide 020 numbers gatewayed to VOIP (as well as
0845, 0870). Costs are (I believe) GBP25 to sign up and GBP9.99 per month. You
might be able to port, but I would be surprised.

0845s are GBP25/year and 0870s GBP7.99 one-off.

Zane.

What if I already have adsl? Can I use it for VOIP, or what.

It will be interesting to follow Vonages announced expansion expected
Q1 this year (UK and Switzerland after Canda) according to their CFO
at a Lehman Brothers conference late last year.

Yes you can use it, and other advantage is that it is not stuck to a
physical place. So for example you can use that landline in your
house during the week, and than take it to your parents house during
the weekend. Or when you go aboard . Which have many advantage
(security, roaming charges, one number, etc.)
