I did various broadband speedtests on someones line to find the upload
speed to be about 450kbits/sec but the download speed to be only 125kbits
per second. I checked this with various speed tests but got the same results
every time. It seems to me that he ought to be getting at least the same
download speed as upload. Apparently it has been better, but when he
reported it as very slow to BT, they simply said the only alternative was
disconnection (from adsl).

The line from road actually lies on the ridge of the roof before coming down
the other side of the roof to a connection box four or five feet from the
ground from which it enters the house. Im suprised BT did this. Surely this
is bad practice? Eventually the covering on the wire will wear away, if it
hasnt done so already.

It is not ideal but there will be a reason for it being the way it is
(laziness is a starter for ten). The cable is very resilient as long as
it is not moving and rubbing on anything.

Thats the point, it will be rubbing on the tiles, its not secured in any
way.

I have a bit of co-ax that runs from the TV Arial on the chimney to the
gutter edge over the roof, it has been just lying there from over 10yrs and
when I inspected it last month it seemed as good as new!

But its lying in a straight line, not over the apex of the roof or any
other sharp point so I guess it should be OK
But not really good practice IMO to leave any cable/flex on/against a
surface unsecured over long lengths anyway.

Apparently Sky fitters cant enter lofts, so a neighbour, who didnt want
cable lying down his roof, had to push the co-ax up through the roof near
the chimney where the dish was going to be and out of the soffit so they
could connect his sky box to the dish.
