Hi:

A friend of mine has a BT line and a standard tariff, and gets his ADSL
from AOL. AOL have offered him a cheap (or even free?) call tariff with
no contract time involved. Has anyone tried it out? Any snags?

If he decides to go back to BT for calls, are there any fees to pay BT
for the new start?

Tell him to come to this group or to speak to AOL and BT. Very easy to do
by phone or
using his Internet connection.
Why did he ask you to find out when he can do it himself?

If its the AOL Talk service, line rental stays with
BT. Calls would be re-routed at the BT exchange.

That looks a bit out of date, but the free offer for
evening and weekend calls monthly subscription charges
apply. There seems to be be plenty of info on the AOL
web-site.

<http://myaolbroadband.co.uk/broadband/talk.adp> and
<http://myaolbroadband.co.uk/broadband/faqTalk.adp> are probably
better pages to look at. The FAQ seems particularly detailed.

As an AOL customer I also received an email inviting me to join their
free UK call tariff at no monthly cost.

I cant see any downsides to signing up. As you say, its CPS; and
the contract runs for a minimum of one month. As the phone line stays
with BT its possible to still route calls via other telcos, and
customers can use free BT services such as 1571 and caller display.

Many thanks Jim and Martin. Just the answers I needed.
