Im thinking of getting a new landline telephone. Does anything like
the following exist (or is it indeed technically possible)?

A landline telephone handset that will detect calls with caller ID and
do one of the following depending on the number that calls me?

1) Allow the phone to ring and go to an answerphone if theres no
answer within about 10 rings.
2) Silently go to answerphone (with different messages for different
numbers).
3) Hang up the phone.

It should be easy to configure this from a PC, so e.g. if Im happy to
take work calls I should be able to switch these on and if I dont
want to take them Ill switch these to answerphone mode (but the phone
should still ring if a member of my family calls about something
important).

It would also be nice if it had an option to record calls at the press
of a button.

Thanks

Richard

Some Panasonic DECT systems with answer machine have a
night mode which suppresses ringing from calls
outside specified categories during a certain time window.

To use different OGMs dependent on CLI, youd need
something more specialised, such as the Tiptel 540 or 570:

3 isnt possible on an analogue line. You can answer it, then immediately
hangup though, but cant hangup the call without answering it.

You can do all of this with a (Linux) PC running Asterisk and an
analogue card (cheap X100p clone ought to be under Ł20)

Bit of a steep learning curve though, and of-course you need to leave
the PC running all the time... Youd also need to use VoIP handsets
throughout the house, or fit a more expensive (eg TDM400p) card or a
separate ATA to plug your phones into.
