Can some kind soul please clarify what number the dialler calls when you
force it to call home?

The blurb seems to mention an 0845 number - and indeed there is one called
Orchid NGN (New) . . in the Do Not Delete config supplied with the
router. But, in the Getting Started config, theres an Orchid GEO - 01536 .
. number.

So Im confused! Does it use the 0845 number just the very first time it
calls home, and then the 01536 number thereafter, or what?

If it always uses the 0845 number, what happens if you block all 08 numbers
(which I have done, because I use VoIP for these) - are you stuffed,
preventing it from ever calling home again - or does the block only apply to
externally dialled numbers and not to internally generated ones?

Well Roger, Im on the Heinz Program and using CPS on my Orchid and I know
that you arent so I dont know if the following will apply to you or not,
but heres a cut n paste of the instructions that Orchid sent to me (and
they mention V4 but I have the V4+ and it works the same):
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

To Force Home your V4 dialler.
Lift Handset & dial ***12#4567890*3
Replace handset

To Force Home your Ranger DECT
Dial *** 00000000 * 3 and Hang Up

When forcing home or entering codes in to a dialler you can do it either
one of two ways depending on what type of phone you have:
1. For DECT (digital cordless) you can dial in the code while the phone is
On Hook (no dial tone) then Press the Dial key, put the phone to your ear
and as soon as the last digit (beep) has been dialled hang up the call.
2. For Corded phones, dial the force home code, ignore any BT annoucement
saying the number you have dialled has not been recognised the hang up
lift up and press Redial. Again listen for the digits to be dialled, then
hang up when the phone has finished dialling the number.

After this the red LED on the front of the dialler should start to flash,
leave the dialler and the phone it is connected to for about 3 - 4 mins,
then make a test call to see if the dialler has picked you new routing.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Not sure if that will help you Roger.

John

Thanks John - but Im afraid that doesnt answer the question. I have the
same instructions, and know that *I* have to dial the ***12#4567890*3 string
to force it to call home. But that string is surely interpreted by the
dialler itself - causing *it* to dial a real number to connect it to the
Orchid server. Im trying to find out what number *it* dials.

That is exactly correct. The first time it dials home, it does use the 0845
number which is part of the first table (Do Not Delete). However each
subsequent user defined table will use the 01536 number. My understanding
(this may be wrong though) is that this number is dialled according to your
rules so if, for example, you dial home during the weekday daytime period
and your rules state 01 numbers during the weekday daytime go over 18185, so
will this callback.

Regards,
Far

Forcing a call home cannot go via 18185 because they sometimes route the
calls through overseas carriers who dont always carry through the calling
number, which is need to identify the caller.

OK, thats not a problem because I can contrive only to do it at evenings
and weekends - when the call will go via BT. Presumably I could set up an
exception for the specific call home number always to go via BT if I
wished? Or maybe I could preface it with 121 - Im not sure whether it
allows me to change it?

Many thanks to Far and Stickems for the clarification.

But surprised to hear that but am not arguing with you.... but why??
Whats the point of the different 0845 number?

David

It certainly seems strange. Maybe there is a technical reason why it needs
to connect to a different server for its first-ever config injection.
