Had a flyer in with my statement today saying that Barclaycard are
moving from 0870 to 0844 for their customer services number. Suppose it
has to be applauded, but as the flyer says, 0844 will still incur a call
setup charge of 6p and then 5p/minute. At least they publish a
geographic number.

This may be the first instance of Ofcoms wish for 0870 to move to 03
numbers not working. Companies seem unwilling to lose their income
stream, I suppose 0844 will still give them that. In fact 0844 may
cost the user more at certain times than 0870 did.

Had a similar letter this week from Orange (was Wanadoo was Freeserve)
saying the same thing. No sign of a geo number.....

What is happening is exactly what I said would happen. No one will be
better off and those of us that used various 0870 numbers, by choice,
will no longer have those services available. Thus there are those
that are no better off and those that are worse off. What a waste of
time and money it has all been. Like many politicians, it is evident
to me that Ofcom have little understanding of how the real world
works.

Im not sure it is to be applauded. Ofcom have announced that they
will be forcing providers to charge the same for 0870 as is charged
for geographic numbers, so this looks like a pre-emptive move by
Barclaycard to protect their revenue stream.

I rather doubt that their flyer admitted this!

In that case, I wonder why anyone would ever call their 0870 or 0844
numbers? Are they relying on customer ignorance of call charges?

Mike.

All very well but if you can call geo numbers free using a mobile as
part of your call allowances than that doesnt help at all
