hi

I have a telephone number here that looks like any other in the area..
but I think it is not with BT. Is there a way I can find out who the
provider is?

TIA

Not that I know of. But if they have voicemail enabled on the line then you
would hear the trendier Virgin Media girl on a cable line as opposed to the
more staid BT woman on a BT line. Of course you may find that the customer
answers the phone, in which case you could ask them.

it is a london number,
020x 123 4567

and the 020x 123, part is the same as a number I know is BT.

But I called BT about this number.. and they think it is probably a
different provider.. I spoke to the woman on that number.

But those are the allocations, it does not take into account number ports.
My number is a BT number, but because I ported it to a VM line, it is
currently allocated to a VM line.

BT Retail is a Service Provider.

All theyre telling you is that the number is not one that they bill
for.

It may still very well be a BT number but under the control of
another BT Service Proviser who has Wholesale agreements with BT
Wholesale & Openreach.

It could also have been ported to the Cable company, or another lines
provider such as Kingston/Torch/Affiniti or whatever theyre calling
themselves today, or even to a VoIP provider.

What possible reason could you want to know which SP theyre with -
cant you just ask them?

Somehow I think this might be a daft question but what does it matter to
you who is the provider to someone else?

If you know them then you can ask, if not then its nothing to do with
you.

Correct, but this is a technical discussion group and providing the OP
question is within the parameters of UK law, which it is, then there is
justification in discussing it.

It could also be argued that it is none of your business to question why he
wants to know!
